Second week of preseason of the Funsport Junior Pros in Brooklyn – more teams getting into action and more scholastic stars of the future emerging.
More first impressions: Rakym Felder (New Heights-Kimani) showed he is ready to join the Junior Pros elite this season with a solid all-around game, including strong drives to the basket with both hands and excellent defensive instincts. . . Jessie Govan, a 6-6 immovable force inside for the Lightning-8th, recorded the first triple-double of the season, but had little help in a loss to New Heights-Mark. . . The lights-out performance today goes to Ryan Kennedy of On Point Cyclones – a preseason-high of 27 points with 4-of-6 three-ponters, including a pair from NBA range. . . Travis Alston of Variety Boys & Girls Club stood out in a close loss to Positive Direction/Big Game as a consistent hard worker with good fundamental skills.
And a second impression: Cheyenne Nettleton got his points (23) once again but this time added a “W” as he increased his playmaking and leadership roles for Positive Direction/Big Game.
Game Summaries: The Westchester Hawks got 13 points from Cole Chang and 11 from Kylan Guerra while topping the NY Tigers-8th 36-25. . . Dwight Robinson completed a three-point play with 1:47 left as NY-Tigers-7th held off Next Level 27-23. . . New Heights-Mark used superior guard play to offset the triple-double effort by Jessie Govan (14 points, 13 rebounds, 11 blocks) and edge the Lightning-8th 28-25. . . New Height-Stanley downed the Rising Stars 55-24 behind Jair Bolden (14 points, 6 boards), Marquise Irizarry (12) and Zack Boczar (11). Christian Vital scored 13 points for the Stars. . . Rakym Felder recorded 24 points with 5 assists and 5 steals, and Terrell Turner added 20 points, to lead New Heights-Kimani to a 64-38 triumph over NYC Panthers. . . Rising Stars bounced back, getting 13 points from Eli McNealy and 12 from Christian Vital while defeating Team Underrated 36-28. . . Positive Direction/Big Game held off a late rally by Variety Boys and Girls Club to earn a 49-47 decision. Cheyenne Nettleton netted a game-high 23 points and Billy Clark added 16 points for the winners. Travis Alston led Variety with 16 points followed by Marques Watson with 15 points. . .
