“The team that comes out and establishes a nice early lead will determine the outcome of this game, ” coach Bryan Klatsky of Team Rio said during the second quarter of the Brooklyn Nets vs Denver Nuggets game that preceded the Funsport Jr.Pros Championship game at the Barclay Center Tuesday Night. This would prove to be the case as Team Rio would use their superior athleticism and ferocious 1-2-2 half court press to jump out to an early 15-6 lead.

In just the first five minutes, the game’s MVP Bryan Antoine (19’)? already had 9 points. He was willingly getting into the paint and to the rim putting his stamp on this game from tip off. After the game Antoine added this about his efforts early on in this championship game, “I didn’t want my guys to come out slow, I wanted to put this game away so I was attacking early and often.” The eighth grader finished the game with a dominating triple-double performance scoring 21 points, pulling in 19 rebounds and handing out 10 assists.

Already trailing big with a few minutes remaining in the first half, highly touted guard Cole Anthony of the Rens started to assert himself by driving to the rim. Cole tried to give his team some life as he was fouled on his way to the basket three straight possessions. The Rens just couldn’t match the energy level of Team Rio. Point guard Jalen Gaffey who showed great poise as the floor general of his team the entire game, had a break away fast break layup to cap a 22-8 run on their way to a 37-14 lead into the intermission.

With a 23-point margin Team Rio turned to their 2-3 defense to force the Rens into perimeter jump shots. The uninspired Rens missed shot after shot and trotted back on defense the entire second half. With 1:19 left in the contest Brian Antoine picked up his final assist to give him ten on the night and polish off what was a spectacular triple-double. Team Rio sent the NY Rens home with their second consecutive Funsport Jr.Pros Championship defeat both taking place in the Barclays Center losing this one 72-39.
